Hana History: Hana-Maui, Hawaii

The origin of Hana as a community is enveloped by the mists of ancient Polynesian song and story. Safe anchorage for canoes, fertile soil and good fishing made it a natural haven for early Pacific navigators. While accessible by sea, however, Hana was isolated from the rest of Maui until 1927, when the completion of a gravel road from Kahului finally made it accessible by land.

Since the Polynesians arrived between 500-800 AD, Hana, nestled amid a mountainous region of Maui, has spawned legends based on family and spirituality and even in modern times, the small village has been kept in an almost ageless step backwards in time. Of the roughly 1800 inhabitants, the tightly-knit locals have kept the original beauty pristine and continues to be teeming with a spiritually renewing, natural aura.

The people of Hana are strongly connected to their natural environment and consider family one of their greatest connections, just as those of generations prior. So much so that important parts of the environment have been named after the legends and stories that have been passed down amongst the generations. When the locals ‘Talk Story’ (Hawaiian phrase for chatting) you might be able to hear the tranquility and spiritual renewal of simple times that still exist in this paradise. The hustling modern world seems to not have had a negative effect on Hana. In fact, even at a luxury resort such as Hana-Maui, serenity and renewal are as natural as the organic gardens on the grounds.

Renowned author James Michener called the beaches of Hana “Heavenly, ” and those both native to the small village, and those not, often have the same sentiments. It is here, in aheavenly and spiritually-rich place where tranquility is a way of life. Hana's reputation as a romantic hideaway began in 1946, when Paul Fagan established the forerunner to Hotel Hana-Maui, the six-room Ka'uiki Inn. Later known as the Hana Ranch Hotel, the inn expanded over the years, winning recognition as Hawai'i's first bona fide neighbor island resort. Beloved by visitors seeking its unique blend of solitude and natural hospitality, the hotel built a loyal clientele over the years. Today regular guests who return annually include second-, third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation members of families that enjoyed its charm over 50 years ago.
